tigop- last project proposal

Originally, I described creating an interactive creature. I later shifted gears, trying to create an interactive world that a user can move through. It functions as a game, but I feel it is relevant to my practice as it incorporates the fictional world I have created and the manifesto that I wrote (which is relevant to censorship, class power struggles, and amending the current system in place if it appears wrong). My goal with this project (before I had made it) was to make the world reveal some sort of greater truth- and I think this could have also been done in a data driven way, but that just isn’t the way I’ve been working recently. After a bit more research, I would like to have data revealed about dependents looking to divorce or minors looking for emancipation, but this wasn’t the place to do that or I didn’t feel like I knew how to incorporate it into the fictional world just yet. I also originally planned on using the makey makey, but then there were too many moving parts so I decided to keep it a bit simpler.

tigop-lookingoutwards8

I found this to be a really interesting project by Lauren McCarthy, a project in which individuals have physical followers as opposed to followers in the digital world. I feel like it is interesting how it shifts the idea of a “follower” from something that creates a system of meritocracy to something that might mean you are being stalked, and how being followed is no longer a means of validation in the latter case. As charming of an idea as this is, I have doubts about who would actually get the app and use it. It’s really funny but I wonder if there’s a way to trick people into using it. I suppose I could also see people intentionally using it. When you are a follower, you are doing the stalking, but maybe to the follower it’s just “people watching”. Interesting to see how this is perceived from both sides of the experience.

Follower – Attention, surveillance and physicality of social media

tigop- looking outwards07

I took a look at Anna Powell-Smith’s “Fix My Street” app, which sends data to your local council, prompting them to fix something in your area, like the pothole mentioned in this video. I see this as an interesting way to collect data and then actually project it towards a central power that has the ability to create the change that is necessary to make your neighborhood a better place. I don’t think many people know about the app (I know I didn’t) but I wonder how significantly neighborhoods would be changed if it was well advertised. It would be interesting to see what other data sets can be collected and how we can provide this data to a power that has the ability to create change that might be out of our scope of ability.

Tigop-mocap

My mocap project! The lighting in the gif shows you more, still learning about directional light and cameras so it’s hard to see the body that has spheres with shifting x coordinates because it is poorly lighted.

So I used the data from Perfume, only I used one of the bodies rather than all three. One body continues to stretch horizontally because the spheres’ x values space out over time, the one in the middle has spheres that spin around really fast, and the one in the front, which reminds me of a slinky, kind of dips into the ground and ends up upside down, then comes back up from the ground.

I would call this piece “Day at the Gym” and ironically, all of the spheres have a skin of my cartoon self (I don’t GO to the gym!!!! This is what would happen if I did!!!!)

Anyways, that’s all folks!

Tigop- Final

This is a small world that I am in the process of making! I’m really excited about it because it’s based off a fictional world that I’ve created outside of class. It makes me really happy to see it manifest itself in P3D! I’ve been working on a manifesto for this other world outside of class as well, and it’s a manifesto that is supposed to be relevant to the world we are living in today (as is the fictional world). So far, this processing program has been my way of exploring how I could allow viewers to interact with the manifesto and be pulled into the great slime bubble.

Throughout the game, viewers have to use their mouse as well as their face to explore. By moving your face and listening to prompts that are given through text, you are allowed to progress through the world and uncover more and more.

Tigop Object

Here I made a small device with the makey makey that functions as a module to teach users about consent. PERFECT for Haven courses that incoming freshman must take as a requirement, now in addition to sending students the last lecture book, students will also be sent a consent module package.

I also thought about how this little module might be used to keep people who want to diet away from junk food. They can place a chocolate bar or cookie inside a box and put it under these guys.

The only downside to this is you need to wear something on your wrist to close the circuit. I would have preferred to have a way to have this happen without the thing that goes on the wrist, but that’s okay. Maybe one day.

PDF: gaslightingbook.pdf

(pdf of book above)

Using the Temboo API service, I decided to retrieve tweets which use the words gaslight, gaslights, gaslighting, gaslighter, gaslighted, etc. I wanted this to be a tool to unveil what the Twitter population’s thoughts on gaslighting were, and as an outcome to this experiment, I received both political commentary as well as personal history of those who claim that they have been gaslighted. I was expecting to see results relating to abusive or toxic relationships and psychological torment, but I was surprised to see tweets on Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump show up. These results made the content of the book extremely reflective of the time we are currently living in, and I thought that was something which made this collection of tweets special. Also, I was unaware of the fact that trans and queer communities might show opposition or hostility towards one another — something that I had learned after reading the retrieved tweets.

I wish I had played around more with imagery, but I was able to play around with the formatting of the font/color/size of the words (which was a bit frustrating — I first tried using Basil.js and InDesign, but because the tweets had many unusual characters, Basil.js freaked out. Due to time constraints, I simply used Processing to generate a PDF of my book.

tigop-Looking Outwards 06

Looking through A Brief History of the Future of Twitterbots, I am finding a some of these bots to be quite arbitrary, and mainly exist to show that it is possible for them to exist…if that makes sense. There are some that definitely may serve an important purpose, and I do like a couple of these-like the random sandwich recipe bot, that’s pretty handy. Followers would possibly accumulate based on a shared interest in collecting these random sandwich recipes, or to find inspiration for their packed lunches. Anything related to random food gets a thumbs up from me. But what I see from these is that in the way they might be random but relate to a specific topic, they kind of serve as a catalyst for creative thinking. For example, the art assignment bot would be a nice way for an individual to have a new exercise for the mind every day. Arbitrarily generated content may seem like a fun way to get “users” or viewers of the content to try new things, expand their mind.

I’m really moved by the yourevalued bot, or bots similar to those, in which the bot responds to an individual using the twitter interface and is depressed. To think that a twitter bot could literally save a life is amazing, and it shows how powerful something that could potentially post sandwiches or random colors and words might be. It is a tool that can literally save humanity!!!!

Bots like this^ as well as bots that can provide twitter users with valuable information are the bots that I personally find myself to be most inspired by. However, I think the idea of using bots to generate content purely for the imagination is interesting. (I mean who am I to say if anything can be ‘purely for the imagination’, people use what they make from that and bring it into the real world, can anything ever really be ‘purely for imagination’?), but I would be curious to see more examples of a twitterbot be used as a tool to create narratives, I also like the idea of having this twitterbot’s output function as something like a performance.

Overall, definitely seeing twitterbots to be a great way to connect with others, a way to really acknowledge our similarities or be there for one another despite differences. Using twitterbots, we can stand in solidarity.

My faceware software is based on a story that I made called the Gumwad Fairy. It is a story about a baby gumwad who lives under a bus seat. Baby gumwad is taken from underneath the bus seat and is flung out through the window by a wretched human. Later in the story, baby gumwad sprouts wings- realizing baby gumwad’s potential as Gumwad Fairy. Gumwad Fairy runs into a creature I call Plushulu (a spin off of Cthulhu) Plushulu’s minions crawl out of Plushulu’s tentacle-thingies, and they convince Gumwad Fairy to join them in their Utopia and leave the land of the god awful humans. Gumwad Fairy decides it is a good idea to leave, and follows them to their land. In this program, you get to control a narrative, you get to perform as a Plushulu minion. You squeak when you talk, can move into the distance and up close, and there’s some lovely music playing in the background.

I had created a separate program to draw the Plushulu Minion. This program stores an ArrayList of coordinates that I have sketched. I later edited the program so that it would export a PDF of the image I created. This was after I actually used the program, but now I have a tool I can use later on! The sketch I made was not a Plushulu minion, I was trying to draw Plushulu but thought to start off simpler.

Being at Weird Reality really allowed me to see both the possibilities as well as the limitations of Virtual Reality. A piece that I got to spend a lot of time with was Jeremy Bailey’s piece called Preterna. It was a piece in which the viewer became part of a commercial, and was able to experience “a stage before pregnancy”, the stage in which an individual is contemplating pregnancy. In the background, you are able to hear Jeremy and his wife, Kristen, bickering over whether or not they wanted to have a child. Jeremy had included 3D scans of his wife in the environment which was created in the piece, and the viewer is able to invade one of the 3D scans, taking over the body and manipulating severed arms which seem to float in the air (this had been achieved through the use of a motion detector placed on the Oculus Rift). The way the viewer steps into the 3D scan raises a question as to whether or not this individual is truly able to empathize with one who is pregnant- all while they are not actually able to experience all the other physical symptoms associated with pregnancy, such as shortness in breath, fatigue, morning sickness (though VR may very well make the nausea accessible), frequent need to urinate, etc. How do we make all these other sensory experiences accessible in the environment which can be created through VR? Talking to Jeremy, it had been made clear that the viewer was not truly supposed to be able to empathize with one who is pregnant, and they are in fact playing a more parasitic role in the invasion of this pregnant woman’s body, participating in a more exploitative role within the commercial. I had spoken to a pregnant woman who tried on the rift, and she said something that stuck with me: “When you step into someone’s shoes, you only take their shoes.” You are never going to fully experience what it is like to be a particular individual because as much as you might know about them, you will never truly know what it felt like to come out of the circumstances that they came out of and to feel the things that they feel. This idea of exploiting the pregnant female body and lacking a connection to who this individual is is a very cynical view on the idea of commercialism and possibly even a critique on commercialism within the health sector. I had a lot of fun working that night.

I was inspired by 8-Ecke, and found a way to generate something similar and build off, while also creating a system which used randomization in an organized way. I generated randomized shapes, and the number of shapes was different each time a pdf was created. I created a dice rolling function, which would spit out an integer from one to six. I called the die rolling function at each subsection that a shape was drawn. the number of rows and columns determined the number of shapes. If the number one was rolled, a shape would not be drawn, and in its place, a hole would be cut out. I manipulated the strokeWeight and colors of the parts of my composition as a way of directing the laser cutter to do what I wanted. I do not undersand because sometimes, it will still cut out a random shape, but it will cut out so few that I almost find it to be another element which adds complexity to the piece. I really enjoyed working on this one, I am in the process of making a book with what I have printed from the laser cutter. I liked the idea of allowing the holes to serve as little peepholes so you could peer through to the next page. While making this project, I felt a lot like I was in a printmaking studio, just because of how getting a nice print takes time. There is something elegant about the work when it is in physical form.

tigop-Clock-Feedback

So I got from my feedback that though some people found the concept of the work to be intriguing, most were disappointed by the visual representation of my concept. I see that it needs visual development that connects to the concept in a stronger manner. I have never thought about citing my artwork before (because of the information being provided, I mean I’ve cited sources of inspiration before but never hard data.) I suppose it is because I’ve never really done data visualization before. I understand that in the future, I should avoid using a default font. I can’t wait to make more computational projects with an underlying concept in the future. Woo! So happy to hear that nobody seemed to have a problem with actually reading the time!!!

What a striking method of data representation! With the increase in climate, the louder and more apparent the “heartbeat” of New York is. It even creates a frightening sound! When I saw that this work had an underlying concept of making a statement about climate change, it made me happy to see a form of activism through the use of computing. It is inspiring, and I am happy to see what is possible with computing for artistic, social, and political practices. I am interested in looking at more of Andrea Polli’s work, I feel like her work could have a huge influence on me.

1) when I think of effective complexity, or even just order and disorder combined in a powerful way, I remember this particular poem that I once read about three years ago. I can’t remember the name of the poem, the artist was pretty unknown as she was just a high school student, but I remember her work being complex in that it expressed cohesive thoughts through using a very bizarre and amusing word choice which added to the disorder. Because I cannot remember the name of this artist, I will talk about another work which illustrates order and disorder in a similar manner, but I just felt the need to at least mention the work of this artist who’s work I read three years ago. Someone else who seems to do something similar is James Joyce in The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, which I happen to still need to finish (I made it like a quarter of the way through the book and never finished it, but I do plan on doing that at some point!) here are some excerpts from the beginning. His word choice is very reflective of the perspective of the main character during a specific moment in time (in this case, as a very young child), and it seems like he is pulling complete gibberish into his writing, but it is actually very thoughtful and expressive.

2) The problem of intent is an important problem to me, and is something I have been thinking of while I’ve considered trying my hand at artistic practices that can be achieved through coding as well as artistic practices in other mediums. Towards the end of last year is when I really started questioning my intentions- I mean, I decided to go to college as an art major for crying out loud. To be so deeply embedded into art culture and the art world and whatever else I might be getting myself into, what was I planning on doing while being in that position? I began to think about how artists can have a significant impact on their environment, and I thought about how I wanted to maybe do something that benefited humanity somehow. I thought that using my art to help society would be valuable, and right now I’m in a position where I’m asking myself “Okay, so with what I’m doing right now, with my interests, what am I willing to communicate with my work/ actively implement in order to help others?” It’s a question I’ve still been thinking of, and I also want to preserve the elements I find valuable in my work such as ridiculous characters I might make, humor, stuff that metaphorically screams weird noises in your face, the personal connection I have with my work, while attempting to accomplish this goal. It’s something I’ll have to find a sweet balance of, it’s there.

R&Sie(n)

R&Sie(n)’s work is very interesting in that it seems to generate landscapes or extensions of landscapes. These landscapes and extensions seem rather extraterrestrial, and I enjoy how the artists merge the extraterrestrial with the mundane by allowing people or animals(or animal figures?) to interact with the space created within the sculptural versions of the generative works. I like the use of code to manipulate an environment.

I am actually mesmerized by my gif(not to toot my own horn, I just didn’t think I could make something like this). I don’t know how fast it runs, but I had a problem with having it run faster than I had wanted for it to run. On my phone it seems to be running okay. I had a completely different vision of this project before I began, I was going to end up creating something that represented my hand drawn cartoons but then I ended up painting. This piece actually reminds me of some of my physical 2D work in a way (old work) so it was kind of weird to see something that reminded me of that on my laptop. Lots to work on, I need to move onto the next step, which means taking this style and applying it. Right now it just feels like a painting, and I don’t find anything wrong with that, I actually came to realize how exploring the algorithms and processes of the code and just playing around was something really special, and I think that new found appreciation is important. I really had fun making this. Just to show you how off this was from my original game plan, you can look at some of my sketches. I had planned to have a creature flying through the air and have these little circles fly behind the creature. Then I became interested in mapping and using trig functions to map, and then I realized that I could use noise, and here we are today. What a journey.

imageI was very amused by Maryyann Landlord and Ralph Kim’s VR piece at the FREE GERMS 2016 Senior Exhibition last semester. In their work, the user got to play the role of an insidious looking character on a bus/subway. As this character, you were able to pop the balloons of small children-like creatures, and by doing so, you made them cry and then they died. You essentially killed them by ruining their happiness. I think there is something compelling about interactive pieces, and I really enjoyed the style of this piece in particular. I like the idea of bringing people into very imaginative worlds and taking on different roles in these worlds. They somehow managed to pull together a piece with an incredibly dark concept, but it felt like it was coated in a layer of sugar. It was very satisfying.

In this project, I was inspired by the idea of data visualization. I thought it was interesting to have a parametric form of data visualization, and I wanted to make a clock which represented something I found to be a serious issue. That issue is lack of access to water throughout the world. I have a large circle to represent a woman or a mother, and a small circle rises from within the larger circle and floats upwards with each second. The large circle moves sideways, representing hours and minutes. Its representation of minutes is a bit more straightforward, as with each passing minute, it moves one step sideways. It moves between elongated lines which stretch across the canvas to represent areas where there are wells for the mother to access water. The lines are three hours apart (with respect to the mother, as it takes three hours from her to get from one well to the next-when in reality it takes some individuals 3 hours and 42 minutes.) The child circle disappears after it reaches the top of the canvas, and it does so with each 90 seconds that pass to represent the fact that every 90 seconds, a child dies of a water related illness due to lack of access of clean and safe drinking water. Each time a child circle disappears, the red value of the background increases by a certain increment.

Moritz Stefaner, who had been part of Data Cuisine, is a German visualization specialist, an independent designer, consultant, and researcher. He has worked with clients like FIFA, Skype, dpa, and has long-term consulting relationships with the OECD, the World Economic Forum, and the Max Planck Research Society- with whom he has worked to analyze large data sets. Stefaner has a background in Cognitive Science and Interface Design. Some of his previous projects include visualization of network security situations in real time, visualization of seasonal wind predictions for the energy sector, a study of the selfie phenomenon, visualization of data on the satisfaction of living in various countries, and visualizations of other scientific findings. Susanne Jaschko, who had worked with Stefaner in Data Cuisine, is a Berlin based independent curator, author, and lecturer. Her work is research-based, and she says that it “centers on an experimental art practice renewing the understanding of art and its social and cultural functions.” Her work is interdisciplinary, as it may sometimes involve things like architecture, design, or science, most significantly placing an emphasis on electronic art and digital culture. She has taught on an academic level in Germany and abroad in institutions such as Universität Leipzig, Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KhiO) or the University of applied sciences FH Potsdam. She also speaks at conferences, and publishes on themes related to her curatorial practice.

I appreciate the concept of data visualization because I find that presenting data as sensory stimuli is an exciting way to shape how humans interpret data. It creates a stronger connection between everyday people and the data that they experience, and with this strengthened connection, the data becomes more memorable. I think Stefaner’s idea of creating programs to explore data is effective in allowing an audience to experience this data, as interactivity creates an intimate relationship between the data and the user. The strictly visual aspects in these depictions of data are very complex, and this complexity creates a vocabulary within the work that a viewer can latch onto when interpreting the data. I am intrigued by bringing the concept of data visualization into installation work, which Stefaner does in Emoto. Emoto is a piece which depicts web activity related to the 2012 Olympic Games held in London. Stefaner scoured the internet for tweets relating to the Olympics and categorized the tweets as “happy”, “sad”, “angry”, etc., as well as detected topics of interest. With this, he was able to create a “real-time sentiment profile” for topics relevant to the games. The installation is comprised of 17 plates with a relief heatmap indicating emotional highs and lows of each day. Viewers were able to scroll through individual stories and most retweeted tweets per hour for each story using a control knob.

Data Cuisine, which Stefaner talks about during the 2016 Eyeo Festival, was a method of data visualization that was new to me, as it depicted data using elements of food such as taste, smell, texture, and even origin (origin of the food). In this project, Stefaner and Jaschko worked together with a group of local chefs and data specialists to create dishes that depicted a variety of data. For example, happiness data was collected from various countries and represented as sweetness in a cupcake, where the amount of sugar correlated with the level of happiness in a country (the more sugar, the more happiness). Smog from various cities was condensed and put inside meringues, so that participants in the workshop were able to taste the smog from these cities and gauge which cities had greater amounts of smog. Other interesting parts of the project include depiction of emigration through sectioning of a filet of a fish and giving each section a flavor specific to the place people from Spain moved to, before and after science cuts in Spain being depicted through texture of cake and also the process in which the cake was made (after science cuts cake used older methods of baking to make a statement that without science, society cannot progress), recording the trends in foreigners immigrating to Helsinki through varying levels of different spices from left to right of a slice of lasagna (Stefaner describes that a participant can actually eat their way through time, which I found amusing),  and the depiction of poverty in a can of sardines.

Something that I found memorable when Stefaner talks about the project is when he uses the term “real-time foodification” when describing this process of expressing real-time data in food. I also thought it was interesting when Stefaner says that there is no such thing as “just food”. He really brought to my attention that food speaks measures about the origin of certain individuals, their identities, their culture, their health habits, and their lifestyles, which I found very eye opening. I’ve been thinking about food a lot more lately, as I’ve been trying to learn to cook now that I’m off my CMU meal plan, and I’ve been finding that I am more compelled to make dishes that my mom would usually prepare. I find that certain spices, textures, and combinations of food are specific to South Indian cuisine, and I feel like holding onto these recipes allow me to hold onto my roots (which I feel like I’ve started to value more while being away from home and having such control over what I eat). When Stefaner says that certain foods have the ability to take you somewhere, I understood what this meant, as I’ve recently been thinking about how certain combinations of ingredients (even though they might not come together exactly the way my mom put them together) brought me back home.

Tigop-FirstWordLastWord

What does it mean when an artist does something that has “already been done”? When someone says something has “already been done”, I think that in most cases it means that the newer work that has been created was not effective in making a novel perspective accessible to an audience. The critic who claims that what the newer work has touched on has “already been done” is not pushed to feel that the newer work is bringing forth an alternate perspective of a previously discussed subject. This new work might have new components that an old work did not have, but if these components are just bells and whistles rather than significant parts that guide the audience towards a moment of insight, a visceral reaction, or whatever it might be that makes the newer piece important (despite the fact that the work’s old relative still lives on), then the new work has failed somehow. This is relevant to creating works that are technologically novel. If the role of the technology does not effectively help an audience reach something past the surface of the work, then the technology might be unnecessary or might serve a better purpose if used differently.

I do not think that it is pointless to continue a conversation that a “first word artist” has started, as perhaps what made the artist’s “first word art” so significant is that it initiated a conversation that was worth continuing. By adding to this conversation, one is not merely “doing something that has been done before”.  One is attempting to explore this conversation in a way that has not been explored before, answer a question, or create a new question from an old one- all of which are certainly worthwhile. I do not think that it is necessary to recreate the wheel in order to reach an idea which is novel. We stand on the shoulders of other artists, even if those other artists include individuals who created work within a cultural interim that existed between “us” and the “first word artists” or “us” and the “last word artists”.

With this being said, I have thought of some questions to consider when further examining Brad’s idea of “last word art”. Does this “last word art,” need to be created within the time frame of a specific art movement (perhaps an art movement that was started by a “first word art”) in order to be considered “last word art”? What are the constraints (if any) a work must fit into in order to be considered “last word art”? Is there a window period that still allows other artists to challenge a potential “last word art” so that their work can be considered “last word art” within that specific movement (making the position “last word art” tentative during this window period)?
