When set free, this gnome is not such a friendly fellow.

Each time you turn away from the gnome, he moves towards you and gets larger and scarier. After initially placing him down, you can walk around him, but as you start to turn away, he rotates to always be facing you. Given this was a scary gnome, I found a place that was particularly fitting and straight out of a horror movie- a long and bleak fluorescent lit hallway. The gnome would have been more at home outside, but I wanted to remove him from his normal environment and place him somewhere new and off-putting. It certainly does not feel as natural to have a gnome in a hallway, but I think this adds to the overall effect.

I created this playful AR experience specifically for the night light in my bedroom to add more liveliness to the moment. The materials and particles used in the scene are intentionally made glowy, thus contrasting the surrounding environment and can be viewed as part of a virtual night light. The fishes swim around the viewer in circular motions with different velocities and distance.

Given the way of how the found model was made, the animation was first done with deformer which gives a better result: (this gif doesn't loop for some reason, so if you want to look at it please refresh the page)

However, unity does not support deformer animation import thus I had to go with rigging even though it fragments the mesh:

Sepho – ARSculpture

For my AR sculpture I used the decal on my hat to project the logo of the hat, making it function almost as an animated billboard. This introduces an interesting, almost hologram-like way to customize clothes and advertise.  Animated/modeled/textured in Maya

A secret door in creepy hallways and hidden closets that leads to another dimension. (Recreation of door concept from Coraline)

When I was a kid I always wanted to have a door like in the movie Coraline (despite how creepy and scary that would be) so I wanted to attempt to create something that would allow anyone to have their own door to an alternate reality. The viewer would discover this door in areas like the end of a creepy hallway, in a spooky closet, or underneath your bed but doesn't open until you turn your back to it. The door is in these places in order to create a sense of unease which makes the idea of turning your back and having something happen even scarier. By having something activate by not looking at it, I wanted to play with the viewers curiosity/disinterest. Once the viewer turns away from the door twice, it fully reveals the random dimension behind the door (there are a variety of alternate reality textures it chooses at random).

A wet floor sign springs to life in new dimensions with this AR experience. The beloved icon from signage across the globe takes on the task of guarding this slippery hazard.  Don't get too close or you'll make it nervous (tap the screen to watch it take a spill).

There is a frog on the toilet

For this project, I wanted to put a frog on the toilet. I think that the shape of a toilet is similar to a tiny pond, so my goal was to make a nice toilet pond. Tapping the screen makes the frog stick her tongue out. I think I could use this mechanic to make a game, maybe.

I used Unity, Maya, and Vuforia!

This is a decorative floating island with a windmill, a bee, and some trees to keep me company in the cold months.

During the winter, all I really want is to be reminded of the fact that the green will come back eventually. I found this floating island model on the Unity asset store, and was inspired to make a little environment based around that. I added a bit of script to a windmill to make it spin, a bee that follows an elliptical path, and a few trees that will be placed upon tapping the screen.

I placed the scene in front of my window so that I could have something else to look at besides snow. There is a relationship between the viewer and the object as both creator and observer.

In the future, I want to try and create an interface with many possible assets so that viewers could "personalize" the island and add different plants and animals to it as they see fit.

AR Naruto summoning scrolls, created as an homage to my favorite childhood anime.

In Naruto, scrolls are used to store objects for later use. When it's unsealed, the object appears from the scroll. You can seal anything, from weapons to energy, to creatures. I saw this as a perfect opportunity to use Vuforia. I wanted to do this as a sort of wish fulfillment. For lots of us as kids (and adults), being able to mimic the abilities of our favorite characters is great fun. I searched for various scrolls used in the show, for example:

I re-edited them from 360p screenshots to HD for printing, and handmade the scrolls from discount paper and wooden sticks. Using Unity and a lot of tutorials, I created the fire and water from particle systems and grabbed the shuriken from online archives. I found this concept's alignment with the assignment very amusing because of how well they fit together. I was pleasantly surprised how well the scrolls worked as Vuforia image targets. One thing I wish I could change is that in Unity, I set a delay so that the object would appear after the glowing ring, but it didn't translate with the build to the Pixel phone.

Thank you to my friends for fooling around with this concept and indulging my love for Naruto.

spooky skeleton found in my closet

In this project, i toyed with the phrase "skeletons in the closet" and used Unity to make the idiom an (augmented) reality. I've established a relationship between the skeleton and the closet by confining the figure within the space. With its movement, the skeleton looks trapped and anxious - even inquisitive of its surroundings. It glances at the viewer and looks away with secretive movements. I wanted to also make it move out of the closet to symbolize the revealing of one's secrets but was not familiar enough with Unity and animations to implement this idea.
