Fairy Lights in Femtoseconds (2013) by Yoichi Ochiai

This is a very beautiful work that opens up a lot of possibilities of interaction between light, matter, and imagination. A specialized laser excites the plasma in the air for a very brief time, (“femtoseconds”), creating a brilliant time that can be recorded on a high speed camera.  The work presents small light creations interacting with matter.  A small line of light floats around a leaf, a finger touches a floating light which blinks.  I find this work very interesting because of how we can project our imagination into the physical space around us.  We can literally make creations that we can interact with in real life.
