For this project, I was inspired by traditional group dances- I wanted to create a pattern where each group of elements interacted with adjacent ones to create ambiguity (who’s partnered with who?). I also
really enjoyed working with balance to unlock the rhythmic power of simple graphic elements. I was greatly pleased by the expressive quality of these clean shapes. Because of this decision, the pattern plays with the eye- the heads sometimes turn into a black and white grid of dots, etc. I am excited by the concept of creating different patterns inspired by different dances: rows, circles, and other formations would make for some interesting future projects.
UPDATE: Scroll to the bottom to see a second wallpaper inspired by this project! I created a tango-inspired row pattern over the weekend.
