Looking Outwards
“Piano Staircase”, brought by Volkswagen, has been installed on the stairs of the subway station near the Dome of Milan, Italy. A team had transformed the stairs into a giant piano keyboard overnight. The staircase represents the piano keyboard so that the user would hear different notes each step. A study shows that after the Piano Staircase was installed, 66 percent of the subway commuters chose to use the stairs over riding the escalator. As a designer, I was interested in this interactive idea because it not only encouraged people to think more environmentally, but also let people enjoy the walk, although it was rather a simple idea. Although many imitations were installed around the world, this project was originally planned and set by a car company, Volkswagen, so it seems like it required the development of custom software rather than to commerce the software.
