Twittering App: Intruder Alert

As humans, we love ownership and when we get attached to things–in particular things that really collectively belong to everyone–we sometimes project imagined notions of ownership that can be completely illogical. For example, in my life, I am emotionally attached to a certain couch that faces the large windows in Hunt Library. This couch has served as a refuge after many all nighters, and I also love the view of the forest it provides. So whenever I go to the library with the intention of studying or sleeping there and I see someone other than myself in that couch, I become irrationally possessive and irritated. So I decided to install an arduino with a capacitive sensor in the middle of the cushion that tweets an alert to me whenever an intruder sits down. A servo sprinkler will simultaneously sprinkle them with water as long as they continue to sit there. The sprinkler should hopefully deter them from sitting too long on my couch, and once they get up, twitter will notify me that they’ve left and the sprinkler will stop. Twitter provides the time they sit down and the time they leave, so I’ll always know when my couch is available to sit on…hahahahaha

New Devices:

1. A microchip that one inserts or embeds in their hand or wrist. With the press of a small button, the chip projects a small virtual QWERTY keyboard above one’s hand. The user then types in thier message, chooses a recipient. Communication is triggered once the user presses enter on the keyboard.

2. A sensory device that tweets or relays the taste of food and drink at restaurants. Rather than a textual output, one would momentarily be able to taste the food they are thinking of buying.

3.A device that notifies you when anyone on your contacts list is hurt or injured. It would provide you with the time, place, and nature of their injury

Electronic Instant Camera by Niklas Roy

Niklas Roy’s electronic instant camera is an ATmega8 camera that takes and prints the images of its subjects on thermal receipt paper.  This devices has elements of Polaroid and digital cameras, but rather than storing the pictures on film or digital data, it streamlines the process by printing the image directly on the thermal paper as it simultaneously snaps the picture.  A microcontroller is used to connect the camera and printer.  I really liked the graphical, high contrast of the the final portraits taken.  The subjects sit and wait for three minutes as their photograph is printed, and I like how this detail undermines the expectations of the subjects–they think they are getting their photos taken by a high tech machine but it is very low tech and accessible.

Four Letter Words by Rob Seward

I think this is just a really beautiful, playful and elegant piece.  Rob Sweard’s Four Letter Words is contrived of four arduino units programed to display all 26 letters of the alphabet through the medium of fluorescent lights.  The units are synchronized to form a very wide spectrum of words, which are “algorithmically generated word sequence derived from a word association database developed by the University of South Florida.”  The algorithms that govern the arduino units are conscious of  “word meaning, rhyme, letter sequencing, and association when they preform.”  The florescent lights attached to the units move with such splendid fluidity.  This work deals with textual art in a really interesting manner.

“Funktionide – New Promises” by Stefan Ulrich

I love this video, funktionide’s interaction with the figure is so bizarre!

“The works intention is to provoke a discussion which enables us to question how much we want technological products to satisfy our emotional desires.”

This project is Stefan Ulrich’s bachelor thesis, a project where he researched new materials to try and alter our interactions with different products.  He wants the objects we see as inanimate to come alive, and he does this with code and arduinos.  The first video is a prototype for what will be funktionide, a …a white amorphous object whose intention is to provide the owner with an atmosphere of presence to counteract feelings of loneliness.”  Funktionide has such interesting potential for the future, I love the working design for the piece as well.

Mesocosm (Northumberland UK) by Veronique Brossier, Xue Hou, Andrea Lira, Laewook Kang

Mesocosm is a massive project, it is a 146 hour, real time cycle of life on the Northumberland moors.  The user can choose to begin the cycle in the winter or in summer, and as it starts, the contour of a figure based on Leigh Bowery sits atop a tree stump.  He makes these minute, subtle movements and after awhile, the whole scene comes alive in the most mesmerizing and captivating way.  Woodland creatures appear, birds, squirrels, countless animals.  The weather changes, the sky moves, the sun sets and rises.  Sometimes refugees and travelers appear on the hill beyond the fences and sometimes, the animals eat Leigh Bowery’s flesh (the red of his skin is the only color in the entire animation), and he frequently up and dances.  There are countless events that occur, and a probability equation codes the animation to ensure it is never the same.  I absolutely love this animation, I find it just breath taking in the complexity it generates from such simple imagery.  Watching the events of the animation takes patiences, but all of the delightful treasures that appear on the screen truly make it well worth the wait.  I suggest just leaving it open in your browser and checking up on the moors every so often.

Adam is a virtual entity that encompasses all of the “fragments of human energy scattered around the virtual world” in one “being”.  It is an interactive web program that takes you on a bizarre, eerie and surreal journey through the internet by clicking on various part’s of Adam’s body (his forehead, collarbone, brain, penis etc).  I just realized that the program’s name is a biblical illusion, as Adam was the first man and Adam001 is the first   It seems like the program draws constantly on internet happenings and re-calibrates to reflect them.  Its a comparatively a rather old program (which is apparent graphically) and a bit theatrical but I quite enjoy messing around in it.  I think it’s a fascinating concept, the idea of trying to amalgamate  every persona and character we create on the web and watch it become this dark, brooding thing that sees and knows everything.

Entrails (openFrameWorks) by Lukasz Karluk

This video is the a preview of a project in progress by Lukasz Karluk.  The final product will be a program that makes contours and polylines reactive to audio stimuli.  Right now the program animates in black and white, which is something I personally hope they keep as the minimal aesthetic of the white contours against the stark black background really appeals to me.  I like the energy of the lines and how expressive and active they are even in their unfinished state.  The flashes of the purple blueprint code lines (I’m not entirely sure what they actually are) gives the animating great perspective, and I just always really like to see unfinished works and creative processes.  Watching this would be so entertaining at a party.

Nemo Observatorium by Lawrence Malstaf

In this 2002 piece, Lawrence Malstaf creates a large cylindrical structure that functions as a typhoon simulator.  The viewer sits in the “eye of the storm” as thousands of tiny styrofoam balls swirl chaotically around them.  The Nemo observatorium is a great example of sensory installation and allows its viewers to experience a phenomenon that could obviously only be experienced with great peril in reality.  One really interesting aspect of the work is the materiality, and the way that Malstaf takes a very specific natural event and so successfully replicates it with completely inorganic items.  Styrofoam balls and reinforced glass hardly come with connotations of nature, but I think sitting in the chamber would make contemplation of nature’s incredible force and power difficult to avoid.  This work was shown in the Woodstreet Galleries downtown-I would have loved to seen and entered the installation!

E-Static Shadows by Dr. Zane Berzina and Jackson Tan

This experimental installation visually communicates the interplay of static electricity in our daily movements and actions.    In this video, viewers interact with the prototype of the final project, which is still in the making.  The installation  analyzes the emission of electrostatic energy in people, light, and sound then light bulbs are lit in “dynamic audio-visual patterns” according to this information.  The project is both an elegant representation of static energy and an opportunity for the creators to conduct research that will “contribute to the knowledge and understanding in the fields of electrostatic, smart textiles, soft technologies and interactive environments in particular as well as interactive art and design in genera l.”  The results of the research generated by the project will  hopefully be utilized in the development of new static electronic technologies that will improve our quality of life in a renewable and sustainable manner.  This project excites me because of its refreshing approach to to research-I think it makes the science of electrostatic energy more accessible and engaging for people such as myself who are unfamiliar with it.

The Artist Is Present Game by Pippin Barr

Continuing on the unintentional post theme of virtual/visual representations of reality is a game by Pippin Barr that humerously and thoughtfully simulates the experience of  an averge museum patron’s attempt to see Marina Abromovic at MoMA during her wildly successful retrospective.  The game has all of these quirky, nice touches such as incredibly long (and realistic) wait times, an inablity to play the game when the MoMA is actually closed, and getting pushed out of the line if you leave your browser unattended for too long.  The game also prompted renewed discussion on whether video games can be considered an artistic medium.   I think its funny how people insist on ridgly defining what art can be and only bestowing the term on works that fit their often narrow  rules (it’s art because it’s created on a traditional medium, it can’t be art because it isn’t conceptual, artists must physically create the work etc, etc).  At the same time, I understand the desire to separate art from from popular culture (an attempt to keep art critical? a need to re-establish the arts as venerable and lofty? ) and the human impulse to categorize, but I think that action risks limiting art’s reach and ends up making the art world seem either elitist and sensational or mired in tradition and unwilling to change.   Marina Abromovic’s work was scoffed at and scorned by art critics and the general public as “non-art” for a very long time until people abandoned their old perceptions of what is and isn’t art.  Basically, I think that art doesn’t have to be exclusive for it to be important.

The Re’Search (Re’Search Wait’s) by Ryan Trecartin

The Re’Search Wait’s is one piece of Ryan Trecartin’s seven room video installation at MoMA PS1.  The show was my first introduction to Trecartin’s phenomenal work, and  it left a lasting impression.  I loved the small details, the minute and eclectic ways each installation was prepared in order to fully immerse the viewer in the work.  The Re’Search Wait’s is one video (along with another that satirized and deconstructed tween culture which I unfortunately can not remember) that really struck me.  The themes in this 40 min video include consumerism, the artifice of reality t.v. , internet culture and it’s increasing omnipresence in our daily lives, globalism, and other issues relevant to our changing society due to new technology.  All of his videos are mesmerizing,  convoluted masses of imagery and garbled language that contain such accurate reflections and critiques on contemporary life. MySpace Intros on YouTube

This is a collection of MySpace Intros (hahah remember when you had a MySpace?) and I think they are really interesting!  I can’t quite remember this being a trend, but apparently some people would upload videos that were supposed to help strangers on their page get to know them better.  Ironically, however, one of the most fascinating aspects of these videos is the glaring visibility of their virtual personae.  Sometimes when you browse Facebook or any other social networking site of your choosing, you get a very strong sense that whoever these people actually are, it’s the person in the staged photos, videos, and scripted comments  they’ve graciously chosen to share online.  Each of these videos are awkward and sometimes painful to watch, and although the individuals attempt originality, they all blur together into desperate plea after desperate plea for people comment or post or whatever.  I think they poignantly show the difficulty of conveying a factual and unique representation of self on the impassive internet.

The Entire Adobe Museum of Digital Art

The Adobe Museum of Digital Art will be the world’s first virtual art museum created with the mission of preserving and presenting incredible new media art.  It is ridiculous. It is crazy. It isn’t even finished yet, and I love it.  When I initially stumbled upon the website I thought, “wow, how awesome, I can’t wait to actually visit once the construction is completed!” And when I saw the featured white spiral building, I mused, “Hmm, this looks cool! But…how…can that be built??” O Adelaide, you simpleton, you fool! Little did she know that she was already IN the museum!  So. I’m excited.  Over the summer the site had a few really neat interactive projects, but I’ve been buzzing around and haven’t been able find them again.  BUT. It’s going to be great.
